Last Man Standing

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, South Louisiana seems more like a civilization clipped from a George Orwell novel than a unique, culturally rich region, fueled by good food, southern hospitality, and a long history of music and the arts. Hundreds have died, thousands are homeless, and millions of lives have been forever altered. The scene is heartbreaking, yet amid the death and devastation many people haven’t lost hope.

One of those people is 31-year-old singer/songwriter, Drew Landry. But much like the South, Landry’s history has been a series of tragedies and triumphs. Through death, divorce, child abuse, infidelity, military service, failed business ventures, his mother's battle with mental illness and cancer, Landry has always been a bright spot in the lives of those who know and love him.

Landry, who has performed with country music legends like Billy Joe Shaver, Hank Williams III, The Gourds and Scott H. Biram, carves out a meager living making custom guitar straps and working manual labor in the Atchafalaya Swamp.

Landry’s hard knock life has produced a songwriter with loose and honest lyrics that strike at the core of humanity and penetrate the soul, much like Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson and John Prine’s have for decades. In our era of contrived, cookie-cutter corporate music creations, Landry’s heart-felt, “from experience” lyricism and authentic sound is a breath of fresh air for music lovers who have worn out their Blood on the Tracks LP.

Last Man Standing will capture Landry’s tough upbringing and present life, while illustrating his mission of playing sincere music for suffering people. The film will observe Landry devoting his days to helping those around him, whether it’s by assisting with hurricane cleanup efforts in his rural Cajun community, or playing music to soothe the souls of those in need. The idea is not only to capture Landry’s songs and performances, but to reveal his persona as an example of living the “right way.”

In a naturalistic cinema verite style, Last Man Standing will examine a slice of America rarely seen on the evening news, following Landry through one-year of his life as he records his second studio album, tours the United States, and inevitably fails or succeeds. Through interviews with friends, family, ex-lovers, employers and band members, we will reveal Landry’s essence as well as the disenfranchised America which inspires his politically truthful songs.
